King Street will be closed to through traffic between Nash and Churton streets during the repair work.
Updated at 11:51 a.m. on May 22, 2023: This version updates the expected start date and notes how the King Street parking lot can be accessed during construction hours.
Part of West King Street is expected to be closed to through traffic next week for replacement of a sewer main that has collapsed. Work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 24.
C & J Utilities will replace a 70-foot section of an 8-inch main near North Occoneechee Street. The work will cost about $110,000 and will take about a week, depending on weather. During that time, King Street will be closed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Nash and Churton streets, with the possibility of extended work hours.
Residents and businesses on King Street will be able to access their driveways and on-street parking. The West King Street parking lot will remain accessible from Churton Street. Outside the work hours, steel plates will be placed over the repair site to allow traffic to resume.
King Street is a state road with heavy vehicle traffic. The state requires detouring traffic to other state roads:
Eastbound traffic will be detoured north on Nash Street and then east on Revere Road/Corbin Street to Churton Street.
Those heading westbound on King Street should travel north on Churton Street, west on Corbin Street/Revere Road and then south on Nash Street to King Street.
More information
The cause of the pipe collapse is not yet known. The pipe is vitrified clay pipe, which was typically installed in the 1930s-50s in Hillsborough. Such pipes can last 100 years or more, but they can break apart due to bedding issues after about 50 years. The pipe will be replaced with a new, more durable ductile iron pipe with a special coating to prevent corrosion.
