Aqus Cafe’s vibrant and somewhat surprising new show, titled “Art Under Foot: Manhole Covers From Around the World,” features aluminum-printed reproductions of the ubiquitous round “lids” to street level underground access points. You know, manhole covers. It seems that in some parts of the world, especially in Tokyo, the utilitarian metallic objects are seen as the perfect canvas for alternative art. With imagery ranging from stylized origami to landscapes to baseball team logos, some of the art pieces are humorous, some historical, some practical and straightforward, some stylish, some even beautiful. Petaluma graphic artist/designer Michael Rylander has been recreating the things since 1996, and several of his favorites are on display now on every available wall of Aqus Cafe. Helpful tags let you known where and when each piece of literal “street art” is from.
